Getting around Karangasem is simple once you know the distances. From Tianyar, Tulamben is about 15 minutes by car and the bays at Amed about 40. Tirta Gangga is about an hour. A scooter suits the coast road, and a driver is better for anything inland or after dark.
What is the coast road like?
The shore road is the spine. The surface is decent and the traffic is light. Trucks and the occasional ceremony can add a few minutes here and there. That is the honest version.
Scooter or driver?
A scooter suits the coast road and short hops. We keep one ready on arrival, with two helmets and a short briefing, charged per scooter, per night of your stay. Fuel is not included. Bring a valid licence, and check the current rules for visitors before you ride. For anything inland, or after dark, a driver is the better call. Ask the concierge for a private car with a driver for up to four guests, billed by the hour or by the day. There is no Grab or Gojek on this coast.
What about going inland?
Inland the roads climb and narrow. Tirta Gangga is about an hour from our gate, and Lempuyang lies beyond it and higher. A half day covers one of them comfortably, and two in a day is a long day. How do you get here from the airport?
Ngurah Rai is about three hours away. That distance is the trade you make for an unhurried coast. A private transfer is an air conditioned car with a named driver waiting past arrivals, for up to four guests per car. More in the road to the north.
What would we tell a friend?
