One coast road, a few climbs inland, and a lot of distance between things. How moving around Bali's north-east corner actually works.
Karangasem holds the north-east corner of Bali. One coast road runs the length of it, a few roads climb inland, and there is real distance between the things you came to see. Once you know how those roads behave, moving around here is simple.
The coast road
The shore road is the spine. From Tianyar, Tulamben is about fifteen minutes by car or scooter, and the bays around Amed are about twenty. The surface is decent and the traffic is light. Trucks and the occasional ceremony can slow a stretch to walking pace, so a twenty minute drive is sometimes forty. That is the honest version.
Scooter or driver
A scooter suits the coast road and short hops. We keep one ready on arrival, with two helmets and a short briefing, charged per scooter per day. Fuel is not included. Bali law requires a valid licence and an International Driving Permit, and that is worth sorting out at home rather than at a counter here. For anything inland, or after dark, a driver is the better call. We can arrange a private car with driver for up to four guests, billed by the hour or by the day.
Going inland
Inland the roads climb and narrow. Tirta Gangga sits about an hour from us on the road east, and Lempuyang lies beyond it and higher. A half day covers one of them comfortably. Two in a day means leaving before light. We do not run treks or guided tours ourselves, so what we arrange is the car and the driver, and you set the pace from there.
Coming from the airport
Ngurah Rai is roughly three hours away. That distance is the trade you make for a quiet coast. Book the transfer with your flight and the fare is a one off, tax and service included, and the driver can take the scenic route past the rice terraces and Mount Agung if you would rather arrive slowly.
What we would tell a friend
Two things hold up here. Move in the morning, while the light is good and the road is empty, then keep the afternoon close to home. And plan by the hour of the day rather than by the kilometre, because on this coast the hour is what decides how long anything takes.
