When Mount Agung shows itself.
Agung is clearest from May to September, and clearest of all at sunrise before the cloud builds. A mountain that size makes its own weather: cloud gathers round the summit through the middle of the day and lifts again towards evening. In the wet months you can drive an hour inland to Lempuyang and find nothing but grey in the gap between the gates. That is the honest risk of that trip, and it is worth pricing into the morning before you book a driver.
The clear window is wide.
April to November gives the clearest water for diving and snorkelling on this coast. The wreck at Tulamben is fifteen minutes away and is dived all year, but the further you sit inside that window, the better the visibility tends to be.
Watch the moon, not the month.
For the night sky the month matters less than the moon. A new moon leaves the sky at its darkest and the Milky Way comes up clearly over the water. A full moon on this coast is bright enough to read by and drowns everything faint. Check which one you are travelling under.
The sea still gets a vote.
The boats go out when the sea allows it, in any month of the year. If a trip cannot go ahead as planned, there is nothing pre-arranged in its place. Ask the concierge or reception on the day and something else can usually be found.
