Dolphins on Bali's north coast

Lovina is where dolphin trips are known. What to expect on the north coast, and what we can and cannot promise from Tianyar.

Dolphin watching on Bali's north coast is best known at Lovina, 1.5 to 2 hours west of Tianyar by car. Dolphins are wild, and no morning is promised anywhere. We cannot promise them off our shore, but a boat with a local fisherman can leave at first light if you ask.

Where do people watch dolphins?

Boats gather at dawn at Lovina, where the trips are well established. The sea on this side of the island is generally calm, and the trips go out when conditions allow. See an alternative to Lovina if you are choosing between the two coasts.

When is the best time to go?

First light. The sea is usually at its calmest early, before the wind builds. The dry season, roughly May to September, gives the steadiest water and the clearest mornings.

Can you see dolphins from Tianyar?

We cannot promise it. A morning on the water here is a morning with a fisherman, and what you see depends on the sea. Ask the concierge what the fishermen have been seeing.

How do you watch gently?

A single slow boat, keeping its distance, is better than several engines chasing a pod. If you go out, go gently and let the dolphins set the pace.

How do you arrange a morning on the water?

Ask the concierge. A local fisherman's boat leaves the shore at 06:00 for sunrise, and goes out when the sea allows. It is a small wooden jukung, the same kind that fishes this coast, not a tour fleet. See the sunrise or sunset tour and Catch and Cook.
