Savanna Point Golden Hour

Rolling golden grasslands sweep down to the ocean, one of the few savanna landscapes in Bali and nothing like the tropical green the rest of the island is known for. Best in the early morning or the last hour of light.

Savanna Point is five minutes from VELA, the nearest of the places on this coast, and it costs nothing but the drive. It is a place on the map, not something we sell, so there is nothing to book.

Drive up as the light softens and watch the sun go down from the overlook. Plan two to three hours for the whole outing, including the drive and the time you want to stay.

To get there you can drive yourself. A scooter can be waiting on arrival, with two helmets and a short briefing, and fuel is not included. Bring your licence and check the current rules yourself before you rent. If you would rather not drive, ask the concierge for a private car with a driver, billed by the hour or by the day.

This is an open hillside, so the weather decides the outing. It is best in the dry season, and the team watches the conditions each day, so ask the concierge what the sky is doing before you set off.

Saga is open from 12:00 to 21:00, so you can come back from the hills and sit down for dinner. It looks straight out over the coast, and the lodges are fifty to eighty metres from the sea.

Who this is not for: anyone expecting an attraction with a programme. It is open grassland, the light is the point, and a flat grey sky is a poor reason to make the drive.
