A Quiet Place to Stay Near Amed and Tulamben

Published

A quiet oceanfront base near Amed and Tulamben for travellers exploring Bali's north-east coast, diving, snorkelling and slow coastal villages.

Amed and Tulamben are among the most rewarding places on Bali's coast. Known for clear water, healthy coral, the famous USAT Liberty shipwreck and a string of quiet fishing villages along the black sand shore. But not everyone wants to stay right in the middle of these dive-focused areas. Some travellers prefer a quieter base nearby.

Amed and Tulamben

Amed is a series of small bays along the north-east coast, popular with divers, snorkellers and travellers drawn to its calm, village-like atmosphere. Tulamben is quieter still, centred around the dive sites, especially the USAT Liberty wreck that sits just offshore. Both areas offer clear water and reef life below the surface, volcanic scenery, and a slower pace than the south. The road connecting them hugs the coast with views of Mount Agung rising behind.

Why stay nearby instead?

Amed and Tulamben are wonderful to explore during the day, but accommodation tends to cluster along the main dive strips. Some travellers, especially those staying longer or seeking a deeper sense of calm, prefer to base themselves just outside these areas. A short drive along the coast puts you in a quieter pocket: fewer dive centres, fewer day-trippers, more open coastline and a greater sense of being away.

Tianyar: between Amed and Tulamben

Tianyar sits on the coast road between these two areas. From here, Tulamben is roughly 15 minutes by scooter or car, and Amed's best bays are about 20 minutes away. The village itself is a working fishing community on a wide stretch of volcanic black sand. No dive shops, no tourist restaurants. Just ocean, open sky, and a coast that feels untouched.

Combining diving with quiet

Staying in Tianyar means you can dive or snorkel the reefs of Amed and the wreck at Tulamben during the day, then return to genuine oceanfront stillness in the evening. The best of both: the USAT Liberty wreck and the reef systems of Amed within easy reach, and a calm, natural place to rest between dives.

VELA Tianyar is a small oceanfront tented camp in the village, designed as a peaceful base for exploring the north-east coast.

Fifteen minutes from Tulamben. Twenty from Amed. A world quieter.
