Surroundings
The landscape around VELA
Volcanic coasts, ancient highlands, and a quieter Bali still shaped by nature.
Tianyar & Karangasem
A coast where landscape tells the story
VELA sits on the quiet volcanic coast of Tianyar, in Karangasem. From here, the island unfolds in every direction: savannas, sacred mountains, underwater worlds, and shores that remain genuinely untouched. These are the places worth knowing.

Landscape
Savanna Tianyar
Rolling golden grasslands that sweep down to the ocean. One of the few savanna landscapes in Bali, offering a dramatic contrast to the tropical greenery elsewhere on the island. Best visited in the early morning or late afternoon light.

Coast
Pantai Pasir Hitam
The black volcanic beach directly below VELA. Dark sand shaped by Mount Agung, waves breaking on an empty shore, and a horizon that belongs only to the fishermen and the few who find their way here.

Coast & Diving
Amed
A string of quiet bays along the northeast coast, known for world-class snorkeling and diving. Traditional salt farming villages, coral gardens close to shore, and a pace that has barely changed in decades.

Diving
Tulamben & USS Liberty Wreck
Home to the famous USAT Liberty shipwreck, a world-class dive site accessible from shore. The wreck sits in shallow water surrounded by vibrant coral and marine life, making it exceptional for both beginners and experienced divers.

Highland
Kintamani & Mount Batur
The ancient volcanic caldera of Mount Batur, with its crater lake and hot springs. A completely different Bali: misty mornings, cool mountain air, and panoramic views over the volcanic landscape from the caldera rim.

Sacred Mountain
Mount Agung
Bali's highest and most sacred peak rises behind VELA, shaping the coastline, the weather, and the spiritual life of the island. On clear mornings, the summit catches the first light long before it reaches the shore.

Culture
Tirta Gangga Water Palace
A royal water palace set among terraced rice paddies in the hills of Karangasem. Spring-fed pools, stone carvings, and gardens that reflect the Balinese relationship between water, landscape, and ceremony.

Rice Terraces
Sidemen Valley
Lush green rice terraces cascading through a quiet valley below Mount Agung. A slower, more traditional side of Bali where weavers still work at looms and mornings begin with offerings placed at every threshold.
